Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting is a celebration of leather culture, born from the post-WWII era,

when men sought an outlet for their desires, their masculinity, and their sexual

identity. Leather, in its richness and texture, is more than just material - it is

armour, a second skin, a symbol of resilience, identity, and pride. It is the bold

statement of freedom, of living authentically in a world that so often demands

conformity - for those living on the fringes, turning desire into a revolutionary act

of self-expression.

The two men in this painting, locked in an intimate kiss, embody the unapologetic

power of this subculture. Their leather is not just a costume, but a gateway into a

world where sexuality, masculinity, and dominance could be freely explored. In

their kiss, we see the release of desire - an outlet for connection, lust, and love in

a time when such expressions were often stifled.

Leather culture, which emerged in the post-war years, offered a space for men to

reclaim their bodies and desires after the rigid confines of war. It became a

symbol of strength, sexual liberation, and brotherhood. This painting pays

homage to that legacy, capturing the sensual energy that lies at the heart of

leather as a subculture - a space where vulnerability and power intertwine.

Through this image, I honor the men who have shaped leather culture, who wear

their leather as a second skin - representing resilience, defiance, and a deep

connection to their sexual identity. The kiss is more than just an intimate act; it’s a

reclamation of self, a celebration of identity, and a bold expression of love that

challenges norms and celebrates freedom.

I respectfully acknowledge the rightful custodians of the land on which I live, work and create as we are meeting on custodial land of the oldest living civilisation in the world. This is a contested space, so I pay my respects to both the Jagera people and the Turrbul people and their Elders, past, present and emerging, for they hold the hopes, dreams, traditions and cultures of Aboriginal Australia.
